Synopsis:

Swaraj invites you to witness a unique confluence (sangam) of the Hindustani and Western streams of music. Come and be a part of an exploration (khoj) of new paths, a Musical Renaissance. In a time when fusion is quite the rage we bring you a show based on fusion that delves deep into the very core of notions and concepts in music. Musical Renaissance is the creation of one of the most benevolent musical maestros of our times, Ustad Sajjad Hussian Khan. Some of the world’s most renowned artists will be sharing the stage with him for this show. They bring an interesting mix of a wide range of instruments including Pakhawaj, Tabla, Dholak, Drums and Octopad, Santoor, Sarangi, Flute, Mandolin, Harmonium, Saxophone, Electric and Acoustic Guitars and Keyboard. Musical Renaissance is a conceptual shift in the way we perceive music. Its path-breaking revelations and soulful renditions will take you through a learning experience you may have never experienced before. We promise you insights into the all encompassing nature of Hindustani music and its ever-present influence on world music. While there have been numerous experiments in fusion, this is a definitive statement of triumph of Hindustani music through ages and across boundaries. Swaraj is an initiative by a group of energetic young students to spread the rich heritage of Hindustani music, especially among the youth.
The Man behind the Renaissance:
Ustad Sajjad Hussain Khan is a versatile and passionate exponent of Hindustani music. He was born on the 22 November 1968, in a family whose musical lineage goes back at least seven generations. Ustadji’s genius lies in simplifying the seemingly complex musical structures into simple and achievable acts of faith. He is a complete artiste and a remarkable Guru. He belongs to the Gwalior gharana and while ``khyal gayaki`` is his forte, his ghazal shows and film music performances are as scintillating. His extensive knowledge of ragas and their effects on human mind and body intensifies the musical experience manifold. He has performed on national and international platforms alike. He has also accompanied many legendary artists from Dr. Vasantrao Deshpande to Pt. Bhimsen Joshi and Ustad Mehdi Hassan Khan on harmonium and violin. He has to his credit television interviews and radio talk shows broadcasted on channels such as ATN, Star Plus, Asia Music and Radio Dallas. He has also done shows on Doordarshan and directed music for television serials.
Ustadji’s steadfast involvement in his students and his efforts towards making them complete in music are admirable. He teaches every student with equal love and passion. He loves people and is always up for a good conversation and a cup of tea. Musical Renaissance is his endeavour to widen the spectrum of musical awareness through fusion.
